背表紙をアーティスト自身で磨いて仕上げたため、各冊にわずかな手作業の痕が残っている場合があります。

本書は、中国出身の写真家・魏子涵による2冊目の写真集。これまでの展覧会にあわせて制作されてきた手製本の痕跡が、本書にも色濃く残っている。挿入ページの構成、手作業で仕上げられた綴じや縁、猫の爪痕を模したサインなど、細部にまで作者の手の痕が宿る。

物語の舞台は、中国のある家族。作者自身と飼い猫「三谷」の二つの視点から語られる物語が重なり合うように構成されている。日記、視覚的記憶、中国的な家族像、そして作家の個人的な時間が、トイカメラのHOLGAを通して一本の線でつながれ、虚構と現実が柔らかく交差する風景を映し出している。

私の両親は、 

1990年11月7日、婚姻届を提出。
2019年、結婚写真を撮影。
2020年に結婚30周年を迎えた。中国ではこれを「真珠婚」と呼ぶ。 

現代の社会において、30年間共に歩むことは、多くの人々にとって羨望の的といえる。

両親はある日、「私たちはまだ結婚写真を撮ったことがない。あなた、写真を学んでいるなら、撮ってくれない？」と言った。この言葉が、本作品制作のきっかけとなった。

本作品のインスピレーションは、コダック・ブラウニー時代の家族アルバムやスナップ写真の美学から得た。そのため、作品名を『MITANI / I did nothing other than to tell them to smile（三谷／ただ笑って、と伝えただけ）』とした。家族写真の多くと同様に、被写体はカメラの前で笑顔を作り、私に向かって「チーズ」と言う。しかし、時折シャッターがうまく切れず、作られた笑顔が次第に硬直したり、瞬きをしたりする場面もある。それでも、その一瞬に込められた喜びの感情は常に本物だ。

家族の話をするとき、「三谷」というシャム猫が欠かせない存在だ。私が不在の間、三谷は家族3人の一員として、その空白を埋めてくれる。このことから、猫の視点で私の家を見るとどのように映るのかを想像した。そして、「キャットアイカメラ」と呼ばれる安価な玩具カメラのHolgaを用い、自分の第三者視点と猫の第一者視点を切り替える試みを始めた。

さらに、これまでと同じように、短いながらも日記のようなテキストを書き留めた。それは、かつて家族アルバムに添えられた記録を思わせるものだ。

Zihan Wei, a Tokyo-based Chinese artist, has released her second photobook, which brings together her two series, "Mitani" and "I Did Nothing Other Than to Tell Them to Smile." In both series, Wei portrays her family – once through the eyes of her cat, Mitani, and then through snapshots of her parents.

According to Wei, an only child, Mitani "fills the void, becoming a vital part of our family of three" since she has moved to Tokyo. In the "Mitani" photographs, Wei uses a cheap Holga camera to capture Mitani's daily life and occasionally snaps photos from cat's-eye level to see the family apartment from Mitani's perspective. "I Did Nothing Other Than to Tell Them to Smile" began when Wei's parents asked her to take their wedding photos – something they had not done in their thirty years of marriage. Here, too, Wei uses the simple, playful aesthetic of a Kodak Brownie camera to photograph her parents shyly holding hands at home, sitting at the kitchen table, helping each other get dressed, and posing together in parks and playgrounds.

“Like most family portraits, the subjects in my photos would create smiles in front of the camera and say "cheese" to me. However, there were moments when the shutter failed to capture the perfect timing, leaving their crafted smiles frozen or their eyes caught mid-blink.
Yet, the joy embedded in those fleeting moments was always genuine.”
